The Circle Back Collection

Circle Back is a small collection of functional ceramic pieces adorned with sketches of the female form. The pencil drawings feel romantic and delicate against the white porcelain clay.

This work is inspired by feelings of nostalgia and early creative practices.

As I continue pursing ceramics, I’ve learned that my best creativity is a result of daily practice and good work habits. It takes repetition, patience, form and control to successfully turn a lump of clay into a well made vessel again and again. I often find myself circling back to old patterns and practices that I picked up as a young artist. This collection is very special to me because I feel like I’m revisiting pieces of my past and allowing them to resurface in new ways.

As an art student, one of my favorite practices was figure drawing. It started in high school - in my AP painting class. I was fortunate to have experiences drawing from live models very early on. I fell in love with the way it felt to apply paint to paper using quick markings based solely on observation. During live figure drawing sessions, one must be completely present in the moment. There is no time to erase or start over- just to capture as much of the expression and form as possible. You often look for the ‘line of action’ and make quick but intentional marks to capture the gesture of the figure.

It has been so refreshing to explore ceramic surfaces with both these quick, gestural studies and simple line drawings. My hope is that you may connect with these one of a kind pieces and enjoy them as decorative items for your home or functional pieces for everyday use.
